5 ways to style your wedding cake

Styling your wedding cake isn’t just about the look and finish of the cake itself, its the way the cake is presented. Its making sure your beautiful, painstakingly designed wedding cake, doesn’t get shoved in a corner next to a fire extinguisher and forgotten about. After all, you want to make sure you get fabulous pictures of you cutting your beautiful cake in front of a beautiful back drop, and before then you want your guests to talk about and get excited by your cake! Make it a focal point of the day. I have 5 simple ways you could do this.

1) Floral displays. Think floral arches, hanging displays and flower walls. Or maybe something simpler like a Cactus or succulents in a pot dotted around the cake, or perhaps dried flower bunches or rose petals on the cake table? Ask your florist for available options.

2) For a cost effective option, consider dressing your cake table with layers of different fabrics or a runner. Layering fabrics gives a very luxurious feel to any table, and will certainly make your cake display feel more elegant, and all for very little money.

3) If your venue has a particularly beautiful feature like a window or a mantle piece, perhaps the cake can be displayed on/around that. My first ever wedding cake was for a client who was getting married in Syon House, and their cake was set up on a table in the conservatory, filled with tropical plants and framed by traditional crittel windows. No additional decor needed, they just used the natural beauty of their venue. Perhaps your venue has a dramatic staircase, like at Morden Hall - why not display the cake there?

4) Cake stands make such a difference to the way in which your cake looks. You can hire or buy stands from various places, or if you’re feeling really fancy, you can design your own cake stand to really make your cake stand out. Most venues will have a cake stand included in the cost of the venue hire, but you may want to check the style of it before you commit to using it - an older, highly decorative cake stand could ruin the look of your modern wedding cake.

5) Light installations and/or candles. Katie at Malarky Cakes made the most fabulous light display cake stand for her triangular cake in October last year, and wow, it took the cake to the next level. Go and have a look at it on her insta - you’ll love it. You don’t necessarily need to have a bespoke light up cake stand like that, but think different height candles in varying colours, or on different candle holders. Perhaps one of your cake tiers could be perspex and have an LED light in it? If you venue has a chandelier or a particularly beautiful decorative light, maybe place the cake underneath it so it can be captured in pictures.
