Top 5 wedding cake FAQs

You’re engaged! Congratulations!!

Planning a wedding is SO much fun. Like, seriously one of the most joyous experiences you will ever have. But, it can be a bit overwhelming and daunting, particularly in the era of Covid uncertainty.

I’ve knocked up a little FAQs for those of you starting to think about your wedding cake, based on the questions I get asked all the time, but if you want any further advice or have more questions, drop me a message via the contact page.

DO YOU DO CAKE TASTING SESSIONS?

Yes, we do cake tasting and design consultations for wedding and large cake orders. Its SO important to try the cake you’ll be serving to your guests, so I strongly advise a tasting session. Plus, its so much fun! Who doesn’t want to eat delicious cake and then talk about it?!

In the days before Covid 19 (remember them?!), tasting sessions were held in person. In today’s world, most tasting sessions are done online. We send out your choice of cake flavours via courier, and we discuss over Zoom and start the design process from there. There is a usually a cost for samples, so make sure you’re fully aware of them before you go ahead.

HOW MUCH WILL MY CAKE COST?

Wedding cakes are made bespoke to order so don’t have fixed prices. Some bakers will have a Price Guide to give you an idea of how much your cake will cost, but this isn’t always visible. The cost of your cake will depend on its design - the more intricate and labour intensive the finished product, the more expensive it will be. Ingredients and the size of your cake will also play a large role in the cost of your cake. Don’t forget about things like delivery and set up fees too - these vary from baker to baker.

WHAT IF I HAVE DIETARY REQUIREMENTS?

Check that your baker can cater to any requirements right from the start. Most bakers offer gluten free and vegan options on request, but your choice of flavours maybe limited. If you have a lot of dietary requirements to cater for or you have a serious allergy to contend with, you may wish to consider a specialist baker such as @avantgardecakestudio

If you only have a few guests that are vegan, for example, why not consider individual vegan cupcakes for those few people, rather than making the entire cake vegan?

DO YOU HAVE TERMS AND CONDITIONS?

Absolutely yes! We need to have these in place to make sure that everyone’s expectations are met, and to protect ourselves should something go wrong (cough Covid cough) Usually Ts and Cs will outline things like payment time frames, what happens in case of injury or emergency and cancellation policies, to name just a few. Every wedding supplier you work with is likely to have their own Ts and Cs so make sure you are familiar with each one before you sign them. Covid clauses are more and more common these days, and tend to outline things like what happens if you need to postpone and/or downsize the service you originally booked. Its definitely worth asking each of your suppliers about their Covid policy as again, they will differ from person to person.

DO YOU DELIVER?/ CAN I COLLECT?

Delivery is available for an additional fee, depending on the size of the cake. Usually delivery of wedding cakes will be calculated by distance from the baker’s studio to the venue. There is a separate set up fee applicable for cakes that need, well, setting up. Most wedding and multi tiered celebration cakes will need setting up at the venue, particularly if you are using fresh flowers or delicate decorations which need to be added once the cake is in situ.

Cakes can be collected and will be packaged ready for safe transportation. Remember, once the cake is in your hands it becomes your responsibility, so travel carefully.

For wedding cake orders we advise clients to let us handle the delivery, to give you the piece of mind that you deserve on your wedding day.
